10th-Feb-2009 09:46 pm - My First First
donna
I feel this should be celebrated!

Today I got my results back for all my work done over my first term of Uni. Our first year we only have to pass, results don't count, and so the pressure is off a bit.

The marking system is as follows (a rough and ready guide for those not familiar with the system)

First Class

1st* (exceptional)
1st (amazing)

Second Class

2.1 + (very high standard)
2.1 = (very good)
2.1 - (good)

2.2 + (some good points but not fabulous)
2.2= (average)
2.2- (ok but poor)

Third Class

3rd Class (Just passing)

It's been my aim to get a first (even just once) from day one, but I was told that it's unlikely we'll start getting firsts until 2nd year. Today I got my results back...(you can see where this is heading;)

The lowest result I got was a 2.2-
The highest....a lower 1st!!!!

Can't believe I did it in the first term!

They say everybody writes a journal with the hope that someday, somebody will read it. I think most people in the explicitly-public LJ-land list interests in the hope that someday somebody will ask about them. This meme, like a dating service, turns all that hoping-somebody-will-ask into a straightforward request. Viva communication!

Leave a comment and I will choose 7 of your LJ profile interests for you to explain/write about.

</em></a>[info] wanted me to write about the following: chick flicks, donna, sewing, vetinari, morgan/garcia, writer's block, sam vimes

Chick Flicks - I like chick flicks, okay, I admit it. I don't like action, horror, or much drama. I like to have fun, let my brain have a rest, eat some chocolate and sigh with the romance. That said, I don't like cheese. Favourites include When Harry Met Sally, 10 Things I Hate About You, You've Got Mail, Failure to Launch, Serendipity, Two Weeks Notice, Calender Girls, The Family Stone, etc. That said, I do like some serious films as well!

Donna - Where do I start? Donna Noble is my personal heroine! She (see my avatar and journal header) is the latest Doctor's assistant, played the the genius Catherine Tate. She's feisty, funny, she cares, she's older than the young women that usually accompany him, she doesn't fancy the Doctor and stands up to him far more, and she's special because she's so normal. Also she wants Doctor and Rose to be together. She also had the most tragic ending of any Doctor Who character - I can still barely talk about it - after travelling with him and finally finding what she was good at and happy doing, finally realising she was important and not just a temp, the Doctor was forced to wipe her memories and leave her with no knowledge of the adventures she had. [/fangirls]

Sewing - I'm quite into cross-stitch and hobby things like that. More recently I'm into knitting, but I might do a little cross-stitch over Christmas.

Vetinari - Vetinari is the tyrant of the Discworld city Ankh-Morpork. Despite being a tyrant he's the cleverest man in Discworld and rules the city with perfect control. He knows that ruling a city isn't about giving people change - it's about making sure that tomorrow is pretty much the same as today. Any passage with Vetinari in sizzles with genius. Sort of like watching Steven Fry.

Morgan/Garcia - My favourite Criminal Minds ship. Garcia is the wildly dressed geeky tech girl with glasses and a sharp comment. Morgan is the hadsome sex-god of the BAU. Together they have the cheekiest phone conversations allowed on television and a real friendship. Fave line: Morgan (after not getting what he wants): "I thought you said this was the office of supreme genius?" Garcia: "Well you've just been transferred to the office of too-frickin-bad."

Writer's Block - Not really an interest - more a state of being!

Sam Vimes - Another Discworld character. He's a straight talking copper who went from being one of a band of four down-and-out watchmen to marrying the richest woman in the city, becoming a Duke, becoming a dad, and bringing law to the lawless city. All while never forgetting his humble beginnings and pissing off most of the rich people in the city. He and Vetinari have a strange sort of friendship that is just genius on the page...

1st-Sep-2008 09:39 pm - Introducing My New Comm!
donna

Well it had to happen sooner or later and here it is! It came about because I was going fruitlessly through the interest search in efforts to find something similar (and also because I have SO MANY images of potential characters).

Character a Day

The intro post with all the rules can be found here and a brief summary is as follows:

-----

1. A picture will be posted every day, along with a few questions to get you thinking about the character.
2. All you have to do is post a comment with the following template:

Character Name:
Genre:
Describe the Character Physically in Your Own Words:
One Line Description of Character:
Tell Us About the Character:
Question Of the Day:

3. At the end of the day I will summarise with the 5 best answers for each question, and at the end of the month I will give an award for the top ten answers.

Who knows - you could find the very next Harry Potter or Mr. Darcy!

----
Anyone can join, just remember to check out the rules in the intro post.

As a small favour to me, would anyone who happens to be a friend of mine (or just a lurking passer-by) please post something in their blog about it to spread the word...it can't really be a comm with just one person! As thanks you'll get a virtual cookie, a virtual knighthood, and a 'I pimped characteraday' avatar should you want it. Just post a comment to let me know you did it!
7th-Aug-2008 07:19 pm - Someone's getting at me...
fandom baseball
The day after I've been dumped by someone called Tony West, I go into my temp job and recieved several calls from someone called Tony Weston.

I read Mansfield Park at lunch, and then the very next call I get is from a Mr. H Crawford (Henry Crawford being a character in the book).

If I go into work tomorrow and get a call from a D. Scully, F. Mulder, or W. Skinner, I'm going home citing mindfuk as my excuse. :)
18th-Jul-2008 03:10 pm - Thursday Night...
Me as Alice in Wonderland on a Pre-Hen Night.

Good night...no real reason for sharing other than I like the outfit! Now roll on the actual Hen Night!
15th-Jul-2008 10:15 pm - WHY?
annoyed

Why is romance so bloody HARD? Why do I have to be so oblivious to signs of it in other people and so bad at showing it myself?

And why, for christ's sake, won't he just ask me out? EVERYONE seems to know that he fancies me (or so I'm told) and EVERYONE seems to know I fancy him. Just because I wouldn't know what to do if he did ask me out doesn't mean that I want to stay in this limbo forever. Either he should make it know he doesn't fancy me and I'll be dissapointed but go back to normal life, or do something!

And why after 20 blissfully uninterested years am I know OBSESSED with my love life? I've had the day from hell and what is my number one concern? Is it my failing career, the temp job I'm ready to quit three days in? Is it my lack of money? My upcoming university course? My parents failing marriage? The fact I put 1/2 a pound on at my slimming class?

No. He was a little unresponsive on instant messenger.

*rolls eyes*

annoyed
Another one...I'm weak and bored and too stupefied to write.

4th-Jul-2008 11:04 am - Seriously...
Now I know why sleep deprevation is such a good tactic.

I went to bed at two (not through choice) and got up at six for work. Got another 7 hours plus before I can get home. Don't think I can last that long without collapsing.
al the good ones...

I've always had a sneaking suspicion that I'm doomed to become an old maid. It happens to everyone of course, the dread of being old and alone with no children to comfort one and surrounded by cats/eaten by alsation [delete as appropriate].

I seem to be practically designed for spinsterhood, having an affection for cats, having (at the age of twenty) had zero relationships, and an old-fashioned view of life that ages me before my time. I couldn't be more perfect if I had warts and nostril-hair (I have neither - just to rest your fears).

This dread if usually cancelled out by fantasies of marriage, children, etc, but none hold true (although I'd certainly look into having children by other means if this lack of love persists into my 30s).

What's brought me back down to earth? Pure rotton luck.

I went out for an innocent spot of Aqua Aerobics and who should be there? The mother of my best friend from the ages of 4-15 who I lost contact with after no less that four moves of mine and one of hers.

She (my friend) is getting MARRIED and has been in a relationship for a year.

Not that I'd want that really - I'm far to set in my ways to settle down so early - but the years I thought I had before the biological clock started ticking and the wedding bells started chiming seem to have frighteningly shortened in the space of a conversation!
